The Witzels of Kbenhavn

Friedrich Christian Witzel

The migration of Witzel families obviously increased as the centuries since the name was adopted unfolded. Certainly, modes of transportation changed allowing for greater freedom of movement. As many Witzel families had already taken the journey to America, some would have made the simpler journey to Germanic speaking regions surrounding Germany. Various conditions during various times in Germany encouraged this movement. Each family history will tell in greater detail the impact of wars and economy on the decision to seek a more promising place to raise future generations.

All in all, each family line is likely to trace back to the Fulda region in central Germany. Specifically, this is likely to be reflected in the history of the Friedrich Christian Witzel family of Kbenhavn (Copenhagen), Danmark (Denmark). John Witzel has researched his family in Danish records which lead back to the birth of Friedrich in Hannover in 1828. Though Kbenhavn might not be an early homeland for the Witzel name, Hannover most certainly should be, as it rests just north of the Fulda-Eichsfeld region. An educated guess would place earlier generations of the family farther to the south.
