orn in Athensleben in 1837, Gottlieb Christoph Witzel was to become the patriarch of the Witzel family of Frderstedt. Among his sons was Friedrich Witzel, whose family remains in Frderstedt to the present day. Another son may have descendents in the nearby town of Stafurt. And his oldest son, Sebastian Friedrich Andreas Witzel, brought his family to America, arriving in Philadelphia in 1906/1908 and settling in Linfield, Pennsylvania.
The family line of Gottlieb Witzel can be traced back to Johann Martin Witzel born about 1750. His last place of residence was in Breitenstein. Slowly, the families moved progressively closer to the small village of Frderstedt. One might suspect that many descendents of Johann Martin Witzel still live near the towns of Breitenstein, Brnecke and Athensleben. Before 1750, this Witzel line is likely to have lived in towns in the Eichsfeld district, closer to Vacha.
Some additional information regarding two of the children of Gottlieb Witzel points to their relocation to Duisburg. On a 1908 ship manifest of the S.S. Merion, Wilhelm Witzel is listed as the 'brother-in-law' of Luise Marie Denecke Witzel, with a place of residence at 193 Provinzialstrae, Marxloh am Rhein, a suburb of Duisburg. In addition, family members in Frderstedt recall an Anna Witzel Koch born in Frderstedt and married in Duisburg. The members of the Koch family were often selected to be godparents to Witzel children. Anna Dorothea Elisabeth Witzel, born in 1867, may have moved to Duisburg along with a brother named Wilhelm. However, the exact identification of these two individuals remains uncetain.

The Friedrich Witzel family still living in Frderstedt.
unt Hilde, wife of Heinz Witzel, recalls from faint memory the early members of the Witzel extended family in Frderstedt. She tells of Otto Andreas Witzel, eldest son of Sebastian Friedrich Andreas Witzel, living with the Friedrich Witzel family in Frderstedt, in a house purchased in 1919. Since Otto did not come to America until 1923, it is likely that he spent some time with relatives in Frderstedt. She also describes memories of family members working at the nearby saltworks. As the notgeld (emergency money) of neighboring Stafurt from 1921 proudly displays, employment at the long-standing salt mining industry of this region may have been the reason for the arrival of Gottlieb Witzel in Frderstedt.
And what could have been the reasons behind Andreas Witzel's decision to bring his family across the ocean to America? Was it the grueling labor at the salt works or the coming of World War I that encouraged his decision? It can only be thought that his hope was that his family would some day enjoy a better life In the promise of America. And for those who remained were the trials of two World Wars. All met the challenges before them and today they are again a family united by modern technology and the enjoyment of abundant societies.
